Exclusive: James Gunn Opens Up About Making His Superman Dream Come True

James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios, is few days away from releasing Superman, which is DC’s first film under his leadership. With the film’s final stages going on, James shared his feelings, “Cautiously optimistic. I feel good… We’re at the finish line.”

For James, Superman isn’t just another superhero. He said, “I love his basic human goodness and kindness. He's just this really good, wonderful guy… kind in a world that doesn't always prop up kindness.”

His bond with DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran made the experience even more special. James said, “He's one of my best friends, and I'm able to hang out with him, and we have a good time.”

James Gunn drew inspiration from the All-Star Superman comic, especially due to his long friendship with its writer, Grant Morrison. He included wild comic book elements like robot assistants and kaijus, but kept Superman grounded: “Being able to still keep the character very grounded in that world… was when I found my way into the story.”

Unlike his previous films with strong music cues, this time the score is more classical. “We have two enormously talented composers… John Murphy and Dave Fleming… based on John Williams' score but also has lots of new and unique stuff.”

Finding the right Superman was key. David Corenswet stood out early for the director. James recalled, after a recommendation from his friend George, who had seen his film Pearl, “He became the one to beat from very early on.”

Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor complete the lead trio. James said Amy Sherman-Palladino gave Rachel “the best recommendation letter I've ever received.” As for Hoult, James always felt he’d make “a great Lex.”

His team, consisting of production designer Beth Mickle and costume designer Judianna Makovsky, helped shape the film’s unique look, based on old-school sci-fi with a modern twist. The world of Superman also includes other heroes. “This is a world in which superheroes aren't exactly commonplace, but they exist and have existed for 300 years.”

They filmed Superman’s Fortress of Solitude scenes in Svalbard, Norway. The director said, “I wanted it to be real.” He also shot in Cleveland, Superman’s birthplace, which gave them total freedom. As for what he hopes people take away from the people: “I want people to walk in the theatre with friends or family or whomever, and love people going out a little more than they loved them going in. If you can bring that out of people’s hearts, that’s the best thing that you can possibly do, for me as a filmmaker.
