Riteish Deshmukhs Raja Shivaji starring Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan to release on this date

The official release date of Riteish Deshmukh's directorial Raja Shivaji has been announced. It is based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a prominent Maratha ruler who was also the founder of the Maratha Empire in India.

The makers released a motion picture to announce the date and the full cast. In the poster, we see a man actor standing on a battlefield, but his face is not properly visible. He is shown holding swords in both hands as he stands in a war zone. We can see fire burning all around him, with bodies scattered all over. While the makers did not reveal who is going to play the titular character, it is being assumed that Riteish will be essaying the character. The film also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Mahesh Manjrekar, Fardeen Khan, Sachin Khedkar, Bhagyashree, Amol Gupte, Riteish and Genelia D'Souza.

It is presented by Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company and produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Genelia Deshmukh. Santosh Sivan is in cinematography, while music is being taken care of by Ajay and Atul. Raja Shivaji will be released in theatres on May 1, 2026.

Sharing the announcement poster, Riteish wrote in Marathi, "We are presenting a cinematic tribute to Maharashtra's beloved deity, the great warrior King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.#RajashivajiMay 1, 2026In Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam"

This is not the first time Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has been portrayed on screen. Actor Amol Khole has played the character in several television shows. Actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar also played Shivaji Maharaj in the film Me Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy. Besides them, Chinmay Mandlekar, Shantanu Moghe, Prasad Oak, Bhushan Pradhan and Sharad Kelkar are also known for playing Shivaji Maharaj on screen.

Meanwhile, Kantara actor Rishab Shetty will be playing the same character in Sandeep Singh's upcoming film The Pride of Bharat: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
