Bollywood Influenced Us Greatly: Another Simple Favour Costume Designer Renee Ehrlich Kalfus

Emily Nelson is back, and she is bringing chaos in couture. Set seven years after the events of A Simple Favor, the sequel Another Simple Favor follows Blake Lively's Emily as she is out of prison and prepares to marry into a wealthy Italian family with links to organised crime. She invites her friend-turned-foe Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) to the wedding, setting the stage for drama, chaos and a murder! And returning to Paul Feig's directorial is costume designer Renee Ehrlich Kalfus, who took it as a challenge to outdo herself and make the sequel a feast for fashion lovers.

Another Simple Favor 2
In an exclusive conversation with Filmfare, she opened up about the creative pressure of topping her work I the first film. "It was a different country and different events. I didn't take it as pressure. I took it as a challenge to make it even more opulent, intimidating and grand," she told us.
The visual inspiration came from Vogue editor Giovanna Battaglia's over-the-top wedding. "It's seven years later, and the big premise for this was that it was a big Italian wedding that took place on the Isle of Capri. The story took place during this wedding week, essentially. And Paul showed us pictures of Giovanna Battaglia, who had a wedding on the exact spot. She's, I believe, a Vogue editor, and he showed some over-the-top, elegant Italian wedding pictures. That was our inspiration, and we took it to the next level."

The Fashion Is Even Better In Another Simple Favor
Renee then went on to share some of her costume notes with us and decoded Blake's striking wedding dress in the film. She shared, "I have some notes on the wedding costume that I am going to read to you. "The wedding dress was designed to create tension, opulence, intimidation. The bustier and leggings are made out of latex. The use of latex for a wedding gown is unexpected and suggestive. It is an unexpected mix of beauty and harshness. The massive silver satin skirt, built in the famous Tirelli costume studio in Rome, created a silhouette of grandeur and size that quite literally kept people away. Emily's character is defiant and does not care what people think. The 40-foot veil is bordered by hundreds of crystals and dipped into a red dye as a harbinger of things to come. The costume was designed to be imposing and memorable," Renee explained.

It is a sequel to the 2018 film

Notably, this marks Renee's fifth collaboration with Paul Feig, following A Simple Favor, Last Christmas, The School for Good and Evil and Jackpot. Their bond has evolved, and Renee shared how her director gives her the freedom to explore ideas. "We were very interested in working with each other. One of the things that has happened over the movies that we've completed is that the relationship has become trustworthy and collaborative. Paul gives me the freedom to explore ideas and bring them to him. That trust helps me connect with the actors, too. He describes the characters, and I create a look for them. And when you create a look that helps them step into their characters, it all comes together. I’d show Paul my ideas, and most of the time, he loved them or gave thoughtful feedback. We’ve worked smoothly from the start, and it’s only become more creative over time. It’s wonderful to keep creating with the same team. There's a safe place for both to be creative and try something new," she shared about Paul.
Before signing off, Renee also shared her admiration for Bollywood. "I was just thinking when I was speaking to you all that Bollywood is so aspirational and beautiful. One of the things that I said to Paul was, this colour should be right in your face - bold and expressive. I do think of Bollywood that way. He is also a huge fan. So kudos. I bow down to that whole industry and think it has influenced us greatly as designers."
