After a theatrical run that earned critical acclaim, Mollywood Times is set to reach a wider audience. JioHotstar has announced that the Naslen starrer will begin streaming on July 3, less than a month after it arrived in cinemas on June 5.
Directed by Abhinav Sunder Nayak, the film follows an aspiring filmmaker whose obsession with making the ultimate Malayalam horror film takes him through a series of personal and professional setbacks. Described by its makers as a "hate letter to cinema", Mollywood Times blends coming-of-age drama with industry satire while exploring the fine line between passion and obsession.
The story centres on a young dreamer inspired by the fictional Hollywood filmmaker Manoj Night Shyamalan. His relentless pursuit of cinematic greatness forms the emotional core of the film, even as his ambitions repeatedly collide with reality. Through that journey, Abhinav examines the intoxicating pull of filmmaking and the cost of chasing artistic success.
The filmmaker has also described Mollywood Times as the second chapter in his planned trilogy exploring the idea of success. His acclaimed debut, Mukundan Unni Associates, serves as the first instalment, making the latest film another step in his unconventional exploration of ambition and morality.

Critical praise, modest box office
Mollywood Times struck a chord with critics upon its theatrical release, with many highlighting Naslen's committed performance and Abhinav's distinctive storytelling voice. The film was widely appreciated for attempting something refreshingly different within mainstream Malayalam cinema, even if opinions varied on its execution.
Filmfare's review described the film as: "Mollywood Times is simultaneously a coming-of-age story, an industry satire and a critique of artistic ambition. It does not always succeed in balancing those competing impulses, and its tendency to labour its points weakens its overall impact. Yet its willingness to interrogate the dreams that sustain cinema makes it one of the more distinctive Malayalam films of the year. It may not be the definitive satire it aspires to be, but it is difficult to deny the ambition behind it."
While the positive reviews generated healthy word of mouth, the appreciation did not translate into major commercial success. According to trade estimates, the film collected around Rs 20 crore at the worldwide box office, making it a modest performer despite its strong critical reception.
Written by Rekhachithram co-writer Ramu Sunil, Mollywood Times features a strong supporting cast that includes Sangeeth Prathap, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Sharaf U Dheen, Roshan Shanavas, Basil Joseph, Appunni Sasi and Gopika Ramesh. The film is produced by Ashiq Usman.
With its digital premiere now around the corner, Mollywood Times gets a fresh opportunity to find viewers who may have missed it in theatres. Given the film's unusual premise, layered commentary on filmmaking and Naslen's widely praised performance, its arrival on OTT could help it earn the broader appreciation that eluded it during its theatrical run.
