Hospital authorities stated that the actor was admitted in an unconscious state and an ECG performed at 7.44 am confirmed that he had passed away. As per a report by The Kathmandu post, "He was unconscious when he was brought in. An ECG was done immediately, which confirmed his death." Doctors believe the cause of death was a cardiac arrest, though the official medical report is yet to be released.
Born in Dang, Nepal, Sunil enjoyed a career that spanned over four decades. He featured in more than 300 Nepali films and emerged as one of the most influential figures in the nation’s cinema. His turn as the antagonist Rate Kaila in the cult favourite Chino (1991) is still regarded as one of the most iconic performances in Nepali film history.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas opened up about the actor in a heartfelt post. Taking to social media, she shared a video montage of them from Mary Kom. She wrote, "You will always be my Coach Sir. You kept me together when I had just lost my dad. You loved me and helped me through many tough days without even realizing. Your warm hugs and your laugh will always be part of my memories. Gone too young but never forgotten. Thank you for your kindness at a time that I was broken. Rest in peace Sunil Thapa... My condolences and prayers are with the family and loved ones."
