Priyanka Chopra Was The Initial Choice To Play Surpanakha In Ranbir Kapoors Ramayana?

Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash in leading roles. While the ensemble cast has also been reportedly confirmed, new reports suggest that Priyanka Chopra Jonas was the first choice to play Ravana’s sister Surpanakha. The role is now reportedly being played by Rakul Preet Singh. According to a report from ETimes, the Citadel actress was the first choice but things eventually didn't work out.

The report states that the makers were keen on having Priyanka on board. However, it further adds, "But things didn't work out owing to her packed schedule with international projects. That's when Rakul came on board. She fitted the role perfectly and brought intensity and a fresh take to the character.”

Priyanka hasn't shared any response on the reports. The makers haven't confirmed the final cast list yet. However, PeeCee is currently working on SS Rajamouli's SSMB29. She is slated to star alongside Mahesh Babu. The untitled movie is currently in production.

As for Ramayana, the movie will release in two parts. Ramayana Part: 1 will release on Diwali 2026, followed by Ramayana Part: 2 on Diwali 2027. Ranbir will play the role of Lord Rama, as Sai Pallavi will be Sita. Yash will portray the role of Ravana. The movie will also star Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodri and Lara Dutta as Kakeyi.

Opening up about choosing to work on Ramayana, Ranbir had previously shared, "It's the story of Lord Ram and Raavan and it's India's greatest story. And to say it to this new generation with the kind of technology that we have it's a very exciting and very gratifying opportunity for me as an actor, especially to play the part of Lord Ram."
